Macintosh Internet Setup Directions

for systems 8.5 & 8.5.1 & 8.6 & 9.2

These directions are posted to help the 8.5 & 8.6 Macintosh users get connected to the internet. The direction are given for the typically setup; a Mac connecting to the internet with a modem, and the ISP assigning the users machine a dynamic IP address.


Step 1 - Gather up the needed information.

You will need the following information:

* Your username
* Your password
* ISP dialup telephone numbers

Earthlink dialup numbers
Pacbell dialup numbers
Verizon/GTE dialup numbers
Everyones Internet dialup numbers

* A domain name server/s (DNS) IP addresses
* Any username prefix that the ISP may require

Earthlinks prefix is: ELN/
GTE's prefix is: GTE/

Step 2 - Configure Remote Access Control Panel.

In the past, Remote Access only include AFP remote network access, now it also includes PPP. Trying to install the old PPP Control Panel instead of using Remote Access appears to not work (at least when I tried it). If Remote Access is not available, then it when have to be installed from the 8.5 system install disk.

Open the Remote Access Control Panel located in the Control Panels Folder
Configure Remote Access by Entering the Needed Information
Configure the options for PPP connection
by clicking on the options button
Configure each panel as shown
(you may wish to reconfigure them after you have gotten connected to the internet)

Step 3 - Configure Modem Control Panel.

Open the Modem Control Panel and configure it
The Modem Control Panel can be opened from Remote Access Control Panel as shown

*** Close Modem Control Panel window and save the results ***

Step 4 - Configure TCP/IP Control Panel.

Open the TCP/IP Control Panel and configure it
The TCP/IP Control Panel can be opened from Remote Access Control Panel as shown
Configure the TCP/IP Control Panel
This alert maybe displayed and the yes button must be selected to continue with the setup
*** Close TCP/IP Control Panel window and save the results ***

Step 5 - Finish the Remote Access setup and Test the Connection.

*** Close Remote Access Control Panel window and save the results ***
Reopen the Remote Access Control Panel as was done in step 2
Click the Connect button to test the settings
If all goes well you will get a window
with all the connection status in it.
