Mac Software Bugs & Some Workarounds
So what is this all about? Well I am tired of trying to report software bugs to companies and having them never fixed. I am posting some of the software workarounds to bugs, in the hopes I can help other users.
If you have more information or feedback on these bugs, please contact me on this page.

This is bug has been a thorn I my side for a long time. I finally sat down and took the time to isolate this bug. This was a difficult crash to isolate and I usually get paid for this kind work. I am giving out the information because OE is a free product.
The crashing bug only occurs if the progress window is left open when quitting OE before doing the complex rebuild of the database. I would likely guess the OE forgets to properly flag or NULL the progress window after it closes it after the rebuilding. OE then startup as it would normally after the rebuild but believes the progress window is initialize and opened as before and goes to use progress window's the memory and crashes. OE does not crash when the window is not left open upon prior quit, because OE does not attempt to use the open window after rebuild.
This bug was also occurring version 5.0.3. And on MacOS 9.2.1, G3 PowerBook.
Other useful OE information on this matter can be found at www.graphixmad.plus.com
This is bug has been a thorn I my side for a while. After finally isolating the problem, I am wish I had looked into the problem sooner. When composition message window is not the main screen the auto-fill in popup email list only somewhat works for the first character typed. When the same open window is moved to the main window the auto-fill in popup email list works, as it should.
iTunes always errors and displays '-17' error when ripping "Last Resort" song on "Hotel California" album by "The Eagles". The ripping is being done with mp3 encoder at 160kbps.
This bug is more then a little annoying when you are traveling and you can not use your PowerBook after disconnecting an extra monitor when you are at home. This bug has not been fully isolated, because the workaround will still be needed whatever the cause turns out to be. This bug occurs on both G4 and G3 PowerBooks.
A full access multi-user gets a blank screen after the login window when PowerBook is being used without the second monitor connected when it was using the extra monitor before. A possible cause for this bug is that extra monitor is being used as the main monitor when it plugged into the PowerBook. The PowerBook then automatically switches the main monitor to the PowerBook when PowerBook is away from home.
The workaround requires that an administrator login into computer. The workaround is for the admin to go into the Preference folder of the full access user and delete the "User Prefs" file (HD:Users:XXXXXX:Preferences). For the most part the user does not lose much of their setup except desktop backgrounds.
Full access multi-user moves a file from the desktop to their document folder, and then attempts to make an alias of that file. The user is displayed an error that they can not make the alias of, "You do not have enough privileges to make changes here. Do you want to create the alias on the desktop?"
With WebSharing setup to use "Personal Netfinder" as its home page, and a diskcopy image file .img in the web folder selected; copy the .img to another computer using a web browser. The resulting .img file downloaded to other computer is unusable.
With WebSharing setup to use "Personal Netfinder" as its home page, and a photoworks .pwp file in the web folder selected; copy the .pwp to another computer using a web browser. The resulting .pwp file downloaded to other computer is unusable.
Setup WebSharing to be on, and also use multiple users on the computer. Reboot the computer and your computer now appears to be frozen while you wait 1.5 minutes for the multi-user login window is be displayed.
This is quite annoying to completely freeze up the whole machine like this until the dns look completes. The 1.5 minute delay only occurs when the machine is not connected to the internet. It is assumed that the WebSharing is waiting for a response from the internet and must wait for the dialup connection to reconnect.
Even when there is not a inbound port mapping on the airport basestation to a web server, the dialup connection is kept up and active when any mac on the local LAN is running websharing. This is disappointing since it would be nice to be able to use the websharing between machines on the local LAN without the airport modem always connected to the ISP.
I may not have exact steps on this bug but some combination hangs the machine.
- copy finder files to a folder but some files are to be replaced.
- cancel the copy.
- immediately do the copy again with the same files but do the copy with the option key down.
* machine hangs
